Ah, Memorial Day weekend...that time of year when we all hit the road and then get pissed off at other drivers (and cops, those sneaky bastards). And although I was tempted to raise the finger in salute to these many stupid drivers I encountered, I did not. (Pats self on back.) But now I am.
I was trying to pass a car in a bona fide passing zone, but it was on a hill and there was an oncoming car cresting the hill from the other side, and I do not have a powerful engine and so did not want to chance it. I turned on my signal and hit the brakes, and would've been fine. However, the minivan I was passing hit her brakes too. I remember from driver's ed all those years ago that she is supposed to remain at a constant speed so I can maneuver. Then she had the guts to glare and point at me when I finally passed her. So my middle finger would like to tell her, Get your minvan ass to a refresher course in driver's ed. And then to a gym.
Then there was the blonde girl in the yellow Honda sports car. She couldn't have been closer to my bumper if I were towing her, and I couldn't speed up because there was a truck in front of me and in order to pass him, I needed to be able to see around him. This, btw, is one of the most deadly highways in the US with narrow lanes and absolutely no shoulder--cliff or concrete barrier on either side. And when she did pass me on a double yellow line, she flipped me off. My middle finger would like to break her middle finger in half and tell her to grow up and drive responsibly. It's a privilege, not a right. (Ironically, she and I arrived at her city at the same time.)
Alas, I shall keep my middle finger pocketed and start drinking Pepto Bismal while I drive instead. I refuse to be either an agressive or stupid driver or one of the 500 +/- people who die on Memorial Day weekend every year.
As for the cops, I think they should knock off doing the speed traps and watch more for irresponsible drivers. Or give me a badge and I'll take care of them.
