Evolving.

So it's Monday Night Football, my favorite part of the week, and the Saints are playing the Lions. Frankly I couldn't care less about either team, but I'm not going to turn it off—I love football too much to commit that act of heresy. So I wonder: What's a tepid fan to do? I don't know what the rest of y'all do, but here's my method for cheering for teams:

1. Broncos. If Denver's playing, I cheer for them no matter who they're playing against.
1b. Green Bay. I used to hate them but I grudgingly became a fan because they're just so damn fun to watch.
1c. Other teams I might go for include San Diego, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia.
2. Raiders last. No matter who* they're playing, I'll cheer for them over the Raiders.
3. West over East. If the Patriots are playing San Diego, I let my coastal bias show.
4. North over South: If New England is playing Miami, I let my climate preference show. Plus teams who play in the snow rock.
5. AFC over NFC, if nothing else.
6. If in doubt, don't go for Texas. (*Yes, I might even cheer for the Raiders over Dallas.)

So Saint Louis vs. Detroit? Well, West over East means Saint Louis, even if my sympathies want to help Detroit suck a little less.

My team needs all the help it can get after that performance.... that hurt to watch. And of course, since my best friend is a die-hard Raiders fan, he got a kick out of this when I read this to him.

Of course, you think your "tepid fan" criteria are complicated, you should see my own criteria for figuring out who I am going to cheer for in any given game in college football.... I think it is even more complicated than the BCS formula.

You're a Detroit fan? Hmm. Sucks to be you, but it's only preseason. You never know.

So post it. I thought mine is fairly complicated. Obviously it would be easier if I just loved or hated each team.

I don't know if you saw this or not, but I did just as you suggested Anglo:
